2020 Sports Awards Winners Announced
2020 had a positive start with early interest in sport and recreation programs and University clubs from students and community members alike. The buzz was electric due to 2020 being an Olympic year as well as the UniNationals returning to Western Australia for the first time in six years.
Student representation in intervarsity events was shaping up to be at all-time high levels with 11 basketball teams alone registering to compete – the most of any WA University.
The positive start to the year, however, was unfortunately significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic requiring the closure of facilities and the suspension of play from March 23, 2020.
However, despite unprecedented circumstances, there have been some great sporting successes for our players and clubs on the field and off. The most significant victory has come from remaining operational and continuing to engage with their members and Curtin students throughout the pandemic.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for the resilience shown by all of our staff, volunteers and members throughout this significantly challenging year. Whether you have given one hour of your time, or over 40 hours a week – week in, week out – your contribution to the philosophy and success of Curtin Sport and Recreation has been outstanding.

AASCF 2019 National Cheer & Dance Championships
Melbourne, Victoria: Federal & State Governments are all investing heavily in trying to arrest the decline in young females participation in sports but AUSTRALIAN ALL STAR CHEERLEADING FEDERATION (AASCF) Cheer & Dance National Championships are bucking the trend with over 59,000 competitors in 2019 .
Curtin University Cheer & Dance Club is proud to be sending 19 athletes to compete in the sports crowning glory being AASCF National Cheer & Dance Championships who will compete against over 12,000 competitors from 1975+ teams at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on 29th November – 1st December 2019 for the coveted title of National Champion.
All Star Cheerleading teams do not cheer for other sports teams…. They are the TEAM!!!
All Star Cheerleading is a competition sport that involves females and/or males performing a 2 minute & 30 second routine composed of stunting, pyramids, group tumbling, jumping and a dance break. This routine is performed and scored against other competitive teams at competitions.
All star competitions are an incredibly exciting and social event where sports combine with theatre as All Star Cheerleading and Dance, perhaps more than any other sport, is judged not solely upon the sum of its parts, but on the overall entertainment value of superior technical athleticism combined with creative presentations.
Curtin University Wesley Football Club Pink Tiger Day
The Shakespeare Partners Pink Tiger Day 2019
The 9th Annual Pink Tiger Day was held on Saturday 18th May at South Oval and a glorious sunny day welcomed 250 guests into the beautifully adorned marquees to watch the Curtin Wesley Tigers don their Pink Tiger jumpers and raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.
This event has become renowned as a highlight on the social calendar for players, sponsors and supporters alike and continues to be the largest fundraiser for The McGrath Foundation by any community sporting club Australia wide.
The wonderful Nat Locke from Nova FM was the MC for the day once again and she was joined by Freo Dockers AFLW star Evie Gooch who kindly shared her experiences as a footballer as well as her mother’s battle with breast cancer throughout Evie’s childhood. Renowned auctioneer Tiny Holy then went about his business and maximized the funds generated from the brilliant array of donated items that went under the hammer. It was also great that the founder of The McGrath Foundation, Tracy Bevan made the trip from Sydney specially to be part of the day.
Delicious canapés, fine wines and live music throughout the day ensured a vibrant, upbeat atmosphere throughout the afternoon. As always the generosity of everyone involved with the day was incredible and saw Pink Tiger Day 2019 raise an amazing $41,000, bringing the total raised over the past 9 years to $311,000!
The club would like to extend a massive thank you to the major sponsor, Shakespeare Partners and to everybody that contributed in any way to the success of the day (be it large or small) including all of the Corporate Sponsors and donors of goods and services.
