Proud to be a Carnaby – Curtin’s Inter-Varsity Efforts
Over the past few weeks, the Curtin Carnaby teams have been participating in various Western Series Inter-Varsity sports including Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball and Beach Volleyball. The competitors have demonstrated great spirit and resilience, with some amazing results versing the other universities in WA!
Both a women’s and men’s team represented Curtin in Hockey. The women’s side started strong, but unfortunately lost their qualifying match to UWA. The men’s sailed through the qualifying rounds undefeated and were triumphant in the grand final!
The Curtin Carnaby’s dominated in Mixed Ultimate Frisbee, winning the entire competition – even with a player down in the final!
The Basketball competition was a great success for our men’s team, placing first overall. The women finished fifth, putting up a strong fight all day.
In Beach Volleyball, Curtin had multiple teams competing. Our men’s pair and the mixed fours were triumphant, winning the gold! With games commencing at 9.30am and continuing till 5pm, the competitors were exhausted, but ecstatic, with their efforts.
Overall, the Curtin athletes performed superbly! A big congratulations to all the students who participated and made us proud. Come on the Carnabys!

New Curtin Integrated Team
This month we are welcoming a brand-new Integrated team to Curtin Wesley Football Club! 18 new players trained at South Oval this week for the first time, alongside coaches Andrew McCarrey and Matt Olivieri. Curtin University Wesley Football Club welcomes all people living with a disability to participate in Integrated Football. Soon, the Integrated team will be competing in the Perth Football League Integrated Competition!
Our integrated team played their first game on 1st May at Curtin’s home ground and had a triumphant win! It was an awesome day, full of smiles and friendly competition.
We encourage everyone to come down and support Curtin’s first Integrated Team. Additionally, if you know anyone that might be interested in playing, registrations for the 2021 season are still open!

2020 Sports Awards Winners Announced
2020 had a positive start with early interest in sport and recreation programs and University clubs from students and community members alike. The buzz was electric due to 2020 being an Olympic year as well as the UniNationals returning to Western Australia for the first time in six years.
Student representation in intervarsity events was shaping up to be at all-time high levels with 11 basketball teams alone registering to compete – the most of any WA University.
The positive start to the year, however, was unfortunately significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic requiring the closure of facilities and the suspension of play from March 23, 2020.
However, despite unprecedented circumstances, there have been some great sporting successes for our players and clubs on the field and off. The most significant victory has come from remaining operational and continuing to engage with their members and Curtin students throughout the pandemic.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for the resilience shown by all of our staff, volunteers and members throughout this significantly challenging year. Whether you have given one hour of your time, or over 40 hours a week – week in, week out – your contribution to the philosophy and success of Curtin Sport and Recreation has been outstanding.
Congratulations to all of the nominees and award recipients at this year’s Curtin University Sport and Recreation awards ceremony.
