2019 Inter-varsity Sports competition
The 2019 Inter-varsity sports competition was held over April and May 2019 with Curtin students representing the university against the rival WA universities.
Curtin recently took part in the 2019 Inter-Varsity Sports Competition, which consisted of Basketball (12th April @ Murdoch), Futsal (3rd May @ Curtin), Volleyball (24th May @ Curtin) and Netball (31st May @ UWA).
Overall, Curtin entered 13 teams in the competition, with 80 students competing in the Curtin colours across all four sports, against the other WA Universities – Murdoch, ECU, UWA and Notre Dame.
This provided a great opportunity for students to represent the university, with Curtin proving to be the most successful University, winning 4 of the 8 divisions and being the overall champion.

Curtin University Boat Club celebrates 50 years
Curtin University Boat Club celebrated its first alumni event in honour of its 50th year under a full moon and clear skies on May 18th.
The celebration saw both past and current members joining together to celebrate the clubs rich history.
Founding President Con Stacey stated, “the strength as a club comes from our core… our foundation of members, our coaches, and rowing for all.” True 50 years ago, true today!
“Thank you for living my dream” were the closing remarks from Mr Stacey who began the club back in 1969 with a small group of students from the then Western Australian Institute of Technology.
Since his time the club has grown, its fleet has expanded and its membership has seen both highs and lows.
However, throughout, the club has always maintained its core belief in the importance of nurturing new members and the value of good coaches, a belief that Con himself ingrained into the club all those years ago.

Curtin student at Volleyball Australia State U23 Championships
Volleyball Australia held their state U23 beach volleyball competition in Bunbury WA at the end of April.
Curtin Student and Elite Athlete program member, Connor McNab approached the stadium with a proposal to represent the University at these Championships.
He and his partner, competed in Curtin uniform and were registered as the Curtin University team in an event comprising teams for all over Australia in front of hundreds of spectators and promoting the University in a regional area. The team finished a very creditable 5th in the competition, losing to the eventual winners in the Quarter finals. In Connors post tournament media statement, he claimed he was delighted to represent his University on the national stage.

Perth Rams Rugby Club celebrate first birthday
The Perth Rams Rugby Union Football Club, which are incorporated into the Curtin University Rugby Union Football Club, celebrated their one year anniversary on Saturday 4 May 2019.
This was celebrated with a home game at Curtin University and a birthday party at Connections Nightclub in the evening.
A large number of supporters turned out at Edinburgh Oval to celebrate one year of LGBTQI+ rugby union in Perth.
Before kick-off, a tunnel of supporters was made so that the team could enter the field in style.
The event attracted large numbers of the LGBTQI+ community onto the Curtin campus.

New State League Netball club Curtin Hamersley Comets
Curtin Hamersley Comets, our new WA State League Netball club with a team in each of the men’s, women’s open and women’s U20 competition have commenced activity on Campus. Saturday 2nd February saw an induction at the Lance Twomey lecture theatre for all players and parents totalling 100 people, where as well as being briefed on season plans, training, uniforms and club codes of conduct, there was a “Welcome to Curtin” discussion, including the University signature values led by our Sport & Recreation manager. The team have since began their preseason training on campus and the players visit the facility 2-3 times per week.

Australian hockey champion enters prestigious Hall of Fame
Former Australian hockey legend and Curtin University Hockey Club player, Bevan George, was inducted into the WA Hall of Champions last week at the 2018 Western Australian Hall of Champions event at Pan Pacific Perth.
A group of past and present Curtin “Pirates” players attended the event to celebrate George’s achievement.
The WA Hall of Champions was founded in 1985 and is essentially the West Australian Institute of Sport’s Hall of Fame.
Eligibility criteria is as follows:
- Outstanding sporting achievement at the highest level.
- The athlete must be accepted as a product of the WA sporting system or have established their reputation while resident in WA.
- The athlete must have retired from the highest level of competition for five years.
George moved to Perth in 1995 and was brought to the Curtin hockey club by his cousins and played in the 1998, 2000 and 2001 premiership with the club.
He was named in the Australian squad in 1999 after playing in the Australian U/21, Junior World Cup and for the Perth Thundersticks state team.
He competed in the 2002 World Cup, 2004 Olympic Games and both the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games where Australia won gold.
George was named Australian Hockey Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004.
George joins current CUHC president Elspeth Denning and Premier 1’s coach Kate Starre as Pirates in the exclusive group.
This is an outstanding achievement and well-deserved recognition.

Curtin Elite Athlete sets sights on Tokyo 2020
Mitchell Durham’s light is burning bright on his way to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Since the middle 2017, Mitchell has gone from strength to strength, dominating in a string of events.
The 2017 competition season was the first step in the long road to Olympic representation in 2020,” said Hani Zahra from the Australian Karate Federation. Mitchell Durham was one of the standouts from the event and a bright prospect as Tokyo 2020 approaches.
Durham dominated both the Under 21 and Senior categories in the Kumite -84kg division.
“Durham truly left his mark on national team selectors,” said Zahra. “He was in great form and displayed some outstanding skill and determination to win gold in the Under 21 division.
“He then sent a powerful message to the incumbent national team members in that category by winning an impressive gold medal in the Senior Male Kumite -84kgs in only his second year as a senior athlete.”
In July 2018, Mitchell has continued his rich vein of form and produced a Silver medal win in the World University Championships in Kobe, Japan.
These recent performances have seen Mitchell selected in the Senior Australian team to compete at the 24th WKF World Senior Championships held in Madrid, Spain in November this year.
The 17 athlete team was selected in late August by Athlete Selection Committee of the Australian Karate Federation and will see the Mitchell compete again on the world stage this year.

Curtin Rugby Club team takes part in International Gay Rugby competition
The Perth Rams, the newest team at Curtin University Rugby Club and the first WA Gay and LBTQI friendly Rugby Club, played their first match at the end of September.
As part of the IGR (International Gay Rugby) competition they travelled to Melbourne to play the Melbourne chargers, decked out in their new Curtin Uniforms.
The club have engaged with the local community in the build up to this match, with several local events to raise awareness and recruit new members and are ramping up for a busy period with the Pride Sports Festival upcoming and plans for an international tour to compete in the IGR Bingham Cup next year.
The club have been extremely positive about their new home at Curtin and the support they received, and are intent on continuing to foster community engagement in an inclusive environment.
Curtin Wesley Football Coach selected as new AFL Women’s coach
Head coach of Curtin’s own Curtin University Wesley Football Club, Trent Cooper, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Fremantle Dockers AFL Women’s side, in a move that highlights the coaching talent at our club and further cements the club’s position in the football community as a leader in development.
Cooper had been head coach at Curtin University Wesley for the 2017 and 2018 seasons while also heavily involved in high performance coaching with various women’s teams at the WAFC and was instrumental into the successful introduction of a Women’s team at Curtin Wesley Tigers.
His appointment as Fremantle’s AFLW coach comes on the back of two disappointing seasons for Fremantle, in which they were able to win just four of their 14 games.
The 2019 AFLW competition will expand from eight teams to ten and will commence in early February.
